Analysis of the operation of the home textile industry in 2020

At the beginning of 2021, the sudden new crown epidemic disrupted the pace of operations in all walks of life. In the first quarter, the home textile industry fell into a state of shutdown and production cuts, and industry revenue fell by nearly 30% compared with the same period last year. However, with the country’s gradual and effective control of the epidemic, industry companies have overcome many difficulties and actively organized the resumption of work and production while effectively responding to the epidemic, so that the operation of the industry has been steadily restored. The industry has returned to positive growth in the second half of the year. The quality and efficiency of the industry remained stable, so that the enterprises above designated size for the year have basically recovered to the level of the same period of the previous year.

1. Orderly recovery throughout the year

In 2021, the home textile industry actively responded to many unfavorable factors, and its operations throughout the year saw steady recovery and development. Enterprises above designated size have played a leading role, and their benefits have rebounded significantly year-on-year. According to the statistics of the National Bureau of Statistics, the 1,796 home textile enterprises above designated size achieved operating income of 185.730 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 0.76%; realized total profits of 10.446 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 14.73%. The main business income of the 244 sample companies tracked by the association fell by 7.21% year-on-year, the total profit fell by 14.12% year-on-year, and the profit rate was 6.55%. The main business income of the 14 industrial clusters tracked fell by 5.75% year-on-year, the total profit fell by 8.07% year-on-year, and the profit rate was 4.45%.

2. Small and micro enterprises are under greater pressure .

Among the sample companies tracked by the Association in 2021, the main business income of enterprises below the designated size decreased by 50.31% compared with the previous year; the total profit decreased by 98.59% compared with the previous year. Among the 14 home textile industry clusters tracked, the total industrial output value of 26,000 enterprises below the designated size fell by 7.2% year-on-year, which was lower than the overall level of the cluster. It can be seen that many unstable factors in the external environment such as the epidemic have a serious impact on home textile small and micro enterprises 。

3. All sub-sectors remain stable
Benefits, towels and fabrics, the three major textile sub-sectors, remained basically stable. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2021, 973 bedding enterprises above designated size achieved operating income of 97.022 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 2.68%. The total profit achieved was 3.892 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 1.00%; the profit rate was 4.31%. The main business income of the 122 sample bedding enterprises tracked by the association fell by 5.49% year-on-year; the total profit fell by 4.66% year-on-year, and the profit rate was 7.32%.

214 towel companies above designated size achieved operating income of 30.504 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 8.35%; realized total profits of 2.021 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 10.03%; profit rate was 6.63%. The main business income of 28 towel companies tracked by the association fell 18.34% year-on-year; the profit rate was 6.67%.

274 cloth art enterprises above designated size across the country realized operating income of 25.782 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 11.04%; realized a total profit of 2.102 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 42.74%; profit margin was 8.15%.
Fourth, the export market encounters challenges

Since the first quarter of 2021, the continuous spread of the global epidemic has brought severe challenges to the export of the home textile industry. According to customs statistics, in 2021, my country’s textile exports totaled US$37.2 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 6.43%.

From the perspective of product categories, the export value of bedding, which has a large share, reached US$12.8 billion, down 2.44% year-on-year; the export value of fabric art was US$12.7 billion, down 9.9% year-on-year. The export value of towels and blankets dropped significantly, -13.77% and -12.44% respectively. At the same time, carpets and kitchen textiles rose against the trend. In 2021, my country’s exports of carpets totaled US$3 billion, an increase of 1.28% year-on-year. The export of food and kitchen textiles was US$2.6 billion, a year-on-year increase of 0.26%. From the perspective of major markets, my country’s export markets to North America and Oceania will achieve positive growth in 2021, with growth rates of 2.11% and 8.35% respectively. Exports to Asia and South America fell sharply, -10.70% and -12.93% respectively.

In 2021, the home textile industry has the courage to face many opportunities and challenges, actively respond to external risks, adjust the industrial structure in a timely manner, and unite efforts. Under the new development pattern where the domestic big cycle is the main body and the international and domestic double cycles promote each other, the home textile industry also needs to establish a more high-quality, efficient, independent and controllable industrial chain and supply chain system. Seize opportunities and respond to challenges. Maintain the stable and healthy development of the industry’s economic operation
