According to news on June 16th, J Michael Evans recently announced that the group plans to expand “Tmall” to Europe and sell local brands to local consumers.
Alibaba stated that it has started a pilot project on Tmall in Spain, with the aim of ultimately expanding its business throughout Europe.
However, relevant Alibaba sources later stated that Evans’ reference to the European version of “Tmall” is a metaphorical generalization, referring to the transformation of AIDC’s service mode in the European market, and the carrier undertaken by such 2C (consumer side) business is currently not very clear and is likely to appear in the form of a packaged solution.
However, regardless, the signal released this time is still very clear. Alibaba indeed intends to establish local services in Europe and sell European brands to European consumers, strengthening Alibaba’s influence in the global market.
More than two months before announcing this news, Alibaba announced plans to split its business into six departments. Alibaba has established six major business groups and multiple business companies, including Cloud Intelligence Group, Taotian Group, Local Life Group, Alibaba International Digital Business Group, Cainiao Group, and Da Wen Yu Group. This move aims to give each department more autonomy and faster decision-making power.
